Revitalizing Salinas: A New Campaign to Keep Curbsides Clean

Salinas, CA (October 15, 2023) - The City of Salinas is launching an ambitious street sweeping program to maintain the cleanliness of our curbsides, while protecting our local water quality and mitigating neighborhood flooding when it rains. Street sweepers have long been unsung heroes in maintaining our community's aesthetics and more importantly keeping harmful pollutants from entering local waterways. However, the effectiveness of the street sweeper depends on how much access they have to the curb. Parked cars that prevent the street sweeper from cleaning the curb limits the City’s ability to remove harmful pollutants, and trash and other debris.
As part of this initiative, the City of Salinas invites you to join us at the Ciclovia Salinas event on October 15, 2023 from 10am - 2pm. Our booth, located near the CVS on Alisal Street, will be a hub of information about our efforts to keep curbsides clean. We welcome everyone to engage in this important conversation about the beauty and functionality of our streets and community.
To help improve our ability to clean the curb, the City plans to roll out a “No Parking” street sweeping schedule beginning in Spring 2024. This new schedule will help the street sweeper keep our curbs free of pollution and debris. This not only will ensure our neighborhoods are clean but protect our stormwater infrastructure so that it can drain our neighborhoods when it rains. The City is dedicated to a thorough educational communications plan to ensure everyone in the community is aware of the upcoming plans and is knowledgeable about the importance of curb access for proper street sweeping. The City's campaign will involve a multipronged approach, including revised sweeping routes and an intelligent scheduling system based on local parking density data and surveys. Our goal is to achieve maximum curb access while minimizing the inconvenience to resident car owners. Continuous data collection and route optimization will be key components of this endeavor to adapt our program to meet our goals, but we need your help.
Streets with the highest amount of debris and greatest need for regular curb access will be signed first. We are committed to working closely with local residents, community based organizations, civic groups, and business owners affected by these changes, providing ample time and access to information in several languages. This will help the community adjust to the new street sweeping routes and parking restrictions.
