‘Salinas Streets Shine Together’ Community Event a Success
Keeping the streets clean of trash and debris and protecting water quality
Salinas, CA (June 25, 2023) - The City of Salinas held a successful community event kicking off our ‘Salinas Streets Shine Together’ campaign. Hundreds of residents, business members, and community organizations were in attendance. City Councilmembers Tony Barreras and Orlando Osornio were also at the kick-off to share the importance of the upcoming Street Sweeping program. Its aimed at preserving the cleanliness and beauty of our streets while protecting our local water quality and mitigating neighborhood flooding when it rains.
“We want to be able to beautify the City of Salinas,” said Councilmember Tony Barrera. “Clean streets mean clean water for you and your family”.
Part of the community event included a before and after Street Sweeping experiment that measured how much toxic pollution is collected along the curbside. The experiment included adding debris and water to a plexiglass container to show how waterways are affected when debris is not properly removed.
The community enjoyed a delicious paleta while learning more about why street sweeping is good for all of Salinas, how the street sweeper works, and how it helps keep our city clean.
Street sweeping effectively removes both large and microscopic pollutants that accumulate on city streets and provides the following additional benefits:

- Protects local water quality
