The City of Salinas to Implement ‘No Parking’ Signage to Improve Street Sweeping and Reduce Stormwater Pollution
Street Sweeping Pilot Program to Go into Effect in Late 2023
Salinas, CA - As we get close to Earth Day (April 22), a day dedicated to preserving and protecting our planet's resources, the City of Salinas is taking action to protect its waterways from urban runoff by providing a much-needed solution to remove trash and debris from the streets.
A recent study found that street sweepers often have the least curb accessibility in City Council Districts 1, 2, and 4. Through the findings from this study, the city identified a problem and is taking action. The streets with the most opportunity for improvement will be the focus area for a Street Sweeping Pilot program scheduled to go into effect later this year.
At a recent community clean-up event in the Alisal neighborhood, volunteers collected 30 bags of trash in just one hour. Most of the debris collected was found along the city’s curbs, highlighting the need for street sweepers to access these areas.
To educate the community on how street sweeping helps ensure clean water and clean neighborhoods for all of Salinas, we invite our media partners to join us for a neighborhood walk to see how much trash we can collect in just one hour.

“The city has the responsibility to make informed decisions, and the data in this study tells us that we need to make changes," said Councilmember Tony Barrera. "With the new street sweeping program, the main goals are to protect our environment and precious resources and invest equitably in keeping our city beautiful."
Street sweeping effectively removes both large and microscopic pollutants that accumulate on city streets and provides the following additional benefits:
- Beautifies the community
- Protects local water quality
- Reduces environmental harm
- Helps prevent localized flooding
